Green Products

Which products would be "green"? How can we modify already existing products to become greener? How to allow consumerism and cradle to cradle to walk happily together hand in hand? Which parts of the system should be adapted? Which should be totally changed?

A similar approach to renewable vs. nonrenewable energy (percentagewise) can be applied to green vs. non-green products. If we do less, we shall succeed less. The vision of renewable energy mostly replacing nonrenewable energy as soon as possible (Earth Policy Institute, Repower America, this meshwork), barely looks realistic, but we should do our best with both renewable energy and green products. If one wanted to come from the point A to the point B, he/she should actually walk. The obstacles won't disappear if we close our eyes and wait (like we in Serbia say "wait for a lemon").

Business as usual promotes competition and greed. Where is the limit of competition and greed? It doesn't exist. If you asked a businessman how much does he need of profit, new investments, and market share, what would be the answer? "More than ever before". This mindset encourages burning bridges between people and their activities unless they bring more profit. It reflects heavily on products, their lifecycles, and how much "green" they are and are allowed to be. Business as usual is a mechanism, a machine. Free people living in a free world should be able to choose their political and economic reality and adapt it to changed circumstances.

Every fast food restaurant sells not only food, but also a name, image, and package. Supermarkets are full of beautifully packed products. If a company that sells fruit wants to be globally competitive, its products must be flawless and packed differently than their "enemies".

Things are supposed to rot, to fall apart and transform into something else. If a thing can't be neither recycled nor become rotten, is there a good reason for it? Can you encourage other billions of people to behave the same way?

In my opinion, the awareness about green products would increase with an increased usage of renewable energy. Renewable energy technologies (in areas in which they can be applied significantly and relatively soon) would accelerate all things green. On the other hand, communities of practice can help a wider implementation of renewable energy. Communities of practice are, like their name says, communities. We also need reshaped communities when competition and business as usual are facing problems.
