Mirrors in the Sky

There are some suggested solutions for global warming (Does global warming even exist? Do we cause it?) floating around the web: charcoal (biochar) burial, algae fed with iron, satellites with mirrors, renewable energy... What should we do? Who will decide? How? Where? When? With whose money, energy, and resources?

I suppose that we can occasionally avoid politics while discussing about sustainability, but there are at least two problems that must be approached top-down. One is technological suggestions for stopping global warning (algae, mirrors...) and the second is overpopulation. If we don't start to retreat from the top of chains of food, consumption, and destruction (one child or less per a couple), we will still be in trouble even with other solutions implemented. The population control has to be done systematically.

There are two equally true facts: Earth is round and business as usual is unsustainable. The whole global society will fail badly if we don't do some drastic changes. People can't leave cigarettes and alcohol in ten years. The leaders to sustainability should be like warriors, but with commitment, boldness, and knowledge instead of weapons. Where other people see crises, they should see opportunities.

Not a single step is taken in the direction of global population control and geoengineering. The whole situation is random and chaotic. It seems that we are about to witness one more spin of the will of fortune before it breaks.

The geoengineering strategy will succeed only if some kind of transnational "government" starts treating all people equally. From the perspective of a Serb, United Nations and similar institutions look like faceless bureaucratic beasts and not so much promising. If you have money (earned mostly while behaving unsustainably) or rich friends, you can do everything (and more).

As challenges grow, dwarfs will hesitate to act. Though, they can start a war anytime. After COP15, expect even less political support for COP16, COP17 and any other COP. Politics and business as usual will never touch carbon capture and storage, biochar, geoengineering and population control.

If Egyptians had modern bureaucracy back in the day, they would have never built pyramids.
