A message from the whale who visited London: a story
“I am your whale sister. I remind you of your present time and of the depths of your past.
You watched and opened your hearts. You followed me as I lived out my last days. I am a mighty whale, yet I am fragile and vulnerable.
Yours is a mighty civilisation that shapes the lives of humans and life for your brother and sister creatures from the largest to the smallest.
Your culture only vaguely remembers through myth and religion the ancient times and civilisations gone by. Yet your landscapes and the ocean depths hold the secrets of civilisations that came and went. Your religions speak of the cycle of time.
I remind you now of civilisations gone by, different from yours but in themselves great and wonderful.
You watched as I thrashed in the shallows of a great river far from my deep ocean home and in the centre of your world.
You watched my final hours from bridges and news channels, with love and concern. You prayed and hoped and wished – that it would turn out well, that I would be set free and find my way home, a symbol of the love and compassion that humans have for nature. It could have gone either way. Would I live, or would I die?
Your scientist tested me, to understand my health. You realised how little you know about my metabolism and how I work. You laid on your hands and dowsed me with water. My soul sang with appreciation for your love and we connected in a way that some will never forget. Even as the tests were happening, you realised that time was of the essence. You used all of your technologies to rush me to the sea, dashing under each bridge before the high tide came.
So it is with your civilisation that the great heart of Gaia (the living planet earth) watches with love and compassion. Will you make it to health, or will your life systems fail you?
Now seek to understand the beautiful metabolism of Gaia of which you are a part. As you used all of your technologies and rushed me towards the sea as the tide rose, you can use all of your technologies to rebalance your civilisation. As you rushed with silent purpose, racing against the incoming rising tide, rush with purpose to rebalance your civilisation in harmony with Gaia.
So this is why I come, the record keeper, reminding you of past cycles of human civilisation, each with its glory. I come to a great city and to your oldest parliament to remind you of the choice you have: will your civilisation adjust or will it fail?
I come as an envoy from ever-loving, compassionate Gaia who has watched the ebb and flow of your civilisations as you watch the ebb and flow of the tides. I say to you, while the tide is rising and the current is strong, still with your love, your compassion, your technology and your wisdom, you can re-make your civilisation. This time you can break free of the cycle and create something new and wonderful. You can find a new level. Call it ‘the kingdom’ call it sustainability. Your time is here.
My soul is now far from the flesh that was my body.
As you read this with open heart and mind, you are the heart and soul of your civilisation, endowing it with life. You are the possibility that your civilisation finds balance and glory. Good speed.”
